Homemade Granola & A Soy Debate

I haven’t posted in a couple days, I’ve been busy :/

Yesterday I had a chance to make some homemade granola due to an overripe banana that I felt I just COULDN’T waste:

I first combined:

  • 3/4 cup water
  • pinch sea salt
  • 3 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 overripe mashed bananer

and then combined in a separate bowl:

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
  • 1/4 cup pecans

Then I combined both together until well mixed.

As usual, I forget to preheat the oven so I had to weight a few minutes while it got to 375 degrees.

Then I layed out the mixture on a foil covered pan and baked for 40 – 50 minutes, carefully mixing the mixture every 10 minutes so that it was evenly baked.

Yum, yum, yum!!

Breakfast this morning was overnight oats:

This concoction featured a new product, Vanilla Hemp Milk, that I was sent coupons for from Living Harvest

The hemp milk has a great flavor, much better than Almond Milk.  I used to be a complete soy girl– soy yogurt, soy milk, soy chai lattes, boca burgers, soy protein bars…. you name it, I ate it.  The low fat high protein soy sources were a great addition to my diet as a vegetarian/pseudo-vegan and until recently I ate no dairy.  Recent research on soy that I’ve read has caused to me eliminate processed soy from my diet and reintroduce dairy.  Although there are conflicting arguments on whether or not it is good or bad, I choose to eliminate processed soy from my diet and keep fermented soy in.

Here’s an article on fermented vs unfermented soy.

Here’s an article titled “The Truth About Unfermented Soy & It’s Harmful Effects”

Do you eat soy?  What soy products do you eat?  What’s your position on this issue?

I think my wisdom teeth are infected :/  On the lower right molars in the back of my gums I’ve had pain for a few days and a nasty taste in my mouth from it, I think it’s an infection (pericoronitis?) but can’t get into the dentist until Tuesday.  Any thoughts on what I should do??

Thank you for those great articles. I try to stay away from soy, I’ve known for some time that there was something fishy going on–but I thought it was just because they were GMed. This really helps! I was starting to feel weary that I didn’t eat tofu, now I know I’m good.

On another note, the granola looks bomb. I’ve been ready to try a batch but keep putting it off. This may be inspiration!

I love the look of your granola! I wondered how a ripe banana was going to fit in, but it all makes sense now. Genius!
As for soy, I eat quite a lot of soy products I think. I have soy milk, and I eat soy nuts occasionally, but not too much overly processed soy I don’t think. I’ve heard so many +ives and -ives about it, I don’t know who to believe anymore!

Thanks for the articles! I’ve been debating about soy for quite a while…. for a long time I’ve been drinking soy milk… eating soy burgers (had one today!)… but I’m slowly starting to think I might go back to dairy…

Probably going to buy dairy milk at the grocery today…

By the way… really enjoy your blog!

I still can’t drink dairy milk (it’s a psychological thing, I’m so used to NOT drinking it- although dairy yogurt is fantastic) but almond milks and hemp milks seem to be appropriate substitutes for me.

What a simple and easy granola recipe! It looks yummy… I was like you and ate soy everything… I was actually reading my blog one day and was like wow I eat a lot of soy. I don’t like to eat “a lot” of anything unless it veggies… So I cut most of it out and started finding other sources. Now I hardly eat anything soy. Isn’t it funny how we can get sucked into those trends?

Homemade granola looks out of this world good! I’m craving some now!!
I am always interested in the soy debates! I eat organic tofu and tempeh mostly. WHat do you think about those? Okay?

I’ve never had tempeh but because it’s fermented I would think it’d be okay. Tofu isn’t fermented and I’m really not a fan of using it (personal preference) but I definitely believe everything in moderation is the way to go.

I REALLY do need to try tempeh, though! 🙂

I seriously need to make my own granola asap — looks awesome! I used to be a soy junkie too (soy milk, soy ice cream, soy yogurt, soy chicken) but I stopped eating soy almost a year ago and I haven’t looked back. I think I was so into the ‘soy obsession’ because I have been a vegetarian for almost 10 years and I thought that was what I was supposed to do. I have found that I feel much healthier when I don’t eat soy.

So glad I found your blog, btw! It’s really great 🙂

I love the granola recipe – very unique, I’ll have to give it a try! Love the mashed banana idea 🙂 And – I always forget to preheat, too, haha.
I’ve recently started limiting my unfermented soy usage, as well. I never had it in mass amounts prior – but also have noticed it in foods I wouldn’t typically think of it to be in! I still love tempeh, and really am just a bit more observant of what gets its’ protein from soy protein, in which case is a no-go for me!

Your granola looks great! As far as soy, I used to drink soy milk a lot but have since switched to almond. I’m going to have to look further into this whoe soy debate! Thanks for bringing it up 🙂
